Speakers
Justin Carria - Macon, Georgia, 55-120 swimmers
Mike Goldbredt - Pennsylvania YMCA, 270 swimmers, 11,000 members
Chris Davis - Swim Atlanta 1500-1800 swimmers, 20,000 lessons/year

Coaches discussed the various tasks and challenges involved with running their teams. It varied tremendously with each team with size and structure seeming to be the deciding factors.

Justin Carria:
Did a majority of work himself, including coaching and administration. He has challenges with lane structure. The concerns of blending his Junior Nats qualifier with his other swimmers. Occasionally his Jr Nats swimmer has to train on his own, in a lane by himself.
Practice structure:

  • 1/week lessons
  • 2/week for 30 minutes
  • Bronze
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Home School program
  • Varsity program for High School swimmers
  • Discounts offered for multiple swimmers.

Mike Goldbredt:
Discussed selling morning practices to his middle school swimmers, runs 3/week for 1-1.25 hours.

Checks report cards to assure swimmers staying on task. Has found that morning swimmers get better grades, and are more alert.

Does most of team tasks, volunteers help with treasury.

Mike has a satellite program at a local High School. He gets 3 ½ hours of daily pool time for free. Has one head coach and three assistants. Mike handles the administration part.

Practice structure:
From 1/week for 1 hour to 7/week for 2 hours.


Chris Davis:
Manages 6-7 locations. Each location has a Senior Coach, Age-group coach, etc. All money collections go through one location. When hiring, 1st priority is good with kids, 2nd is technical.

Chris handles maintenance at pools. Each facility does its own hiring and firing.

Created a handbook for consistency at each location.

Offers home school group during off hours.


Southern Zone Meeting

Zones Task Committee:

  • Pete Malone presented task committees recommendation of a Senior Zone Meet.
  • USA Swimming is providing $10K to host
  • 15 & over meet
  • Time standards between Sectionals and Juniors
  • Club Driven - Athletes represent their own clubs
  • Scheduled the same weekend as US Open, Aug. 5-9th

Zone meet to be held in Orlando this year, and Atlanta in 2010.
