Thanks from a Zones Parent
As the parent of one of the swimmers on the South Texas Zones team I would like to thank you (the Board) for supporting Zones and giving our kids the opportunity to participate in an outstanding experience.
I returned late last night after spending part of the week officiating at the meet. While there I had the chance to observe the kids first hand and they appeared to be having a great time. Not only did they swim well but they represented the LSC with class and sportsmanship that was recognized by other teams. I was very proud of their behavior at the pool and the hotel. I think this reflects the caliber of kids on the team, but also is a result of the outstanding efforts of the coaching staff. As a parent it takes a lot of trust to send your child on this type of road trip; but having worked previous all star meets and seeing some of the same coaches in action I was confident the kids were in good hands. I know there is a ton of work behind the scenes in advance of the trip as well as the LONG hours while traveling, and it is greatly appreciated. In my opinion the coaches did an outstanding job.
I think one of the great things about swimming is that it provides opportunities for personal growth and development in addition to the athletic/physical benefits of the sport. Our son has been fortunate to participate in all stars the past two years and it was a great experience both times. It was a very good learning, socialization and developmental experience for him and I believe will help him in the long run in and outside the pool.
My only disappointment, in the prior years’ all stars and again this year with Zones, is our inability to generate enough interest to field full teams. My experience has been that many parents of qualified swimmers aren’t even aware of these events (you’d be surprised how many people do not see the info on the ST website). Hopefully with enough positive feedback more coaches will promote the events. Personally I plan to talk it up more with parents at our club. With the number of swimmers and level of talent we have in South Texas we should have many more kids interested/competing to be selected for these special events.
I sincerely hope the Board will continue supporting these events in the future. Our kids our growing up in a world with many threats and temptations and swimming is a great sport that can help them navigate through their challenging teen years. All Stars, Zones, camps, etc. are all activities that help motivate and reward kids and in the long run help keep them in the sport. After spending much of the past week with a few hundred outstanding kids from all over the southeast, I personally came away feeling much more optimistic about our younger generation. It also has me convinced of the importance of the job that all of you are filling by leading the LSC.
With thanks and regards,
Bill Carroll
